Engine

The 964 Speedster was fitted with the M64/01 (Boxer) engine.

The standard engine had the following specifications:

· Engine design: Air/oil-cooled, horizontally opposed, dry-sump lubricated, rear-mounted

· Cylinders: Six

· Bore and stroke: 100 x 76.4 mm (3.94 x 3.01 in)

· Displacement 3,600cc (220 cu inches)

· Cylinders 6 Boxer Engine

· Compression Ratio 11.3:1

· Fuel/ignition: Electronic fuel injection, DME controller, with twin-spark with knock regulation

· Crankshaft: Forged, seven main bearings

· Block and heads: aluminium alloy

· Valve Train: Single Overhead cam one per bank, double chain drive

· Motor Output 250 bhp / 184 kw (definitely at least 275 bhp and possibly significantly more in the Little Blue Porsche)

As stated elsewhere I have been told that the engine on the Little Blue Porsche was modified at Porsche Racing Division. I have evidence that the exhaust was changed to a sports exhaust and the engine was chip tuned. This would have given the car a further 25 bhp resulting in a total bhp of approximately 275. However, as recorded in the History Section - it may be the Little Blue Porsche had significantly additional alterations made to the engine.

Also Stewie understands "Believe, but never saw it, the Japanese owner put on a strut brace."

Gear Box

G50 / 03 transmission ratios:

· 1st gear 3,500

· 2nd gear 2,059

· 3rd gear 1,407

· 4th gear 1,086

· 5th gear 0.868

· Reverse gear 2,857

· Axle Drive 3,444

Aerodynamics

Due to improved aerodynamics the air resistance was less than any previous Porsche with a drag coefficient of 0.32. Consequently with the 250hp Boxer engine the 964 could reach the same top speed as the 911 Turbo type 930.

‘Emergency’ soft top.

The 964 Speedster was designed as an open car. Although modifications of the windscreen and windscreen seal meant that the top was more weather proof than that of the previous 911 3.2 litre version, it was very much still intended for emergency use only.

Indeed, Porsche insisted required purchasers of new cars to exempt Porsche from problems with water-tightness of the hood. To ensure that customers were aware of this problem they had to sign a disclaimer as shown below. This is dated 1989 so relates to the earlier version but I have not been able to find the version for the 964 although I am told it was very similar.

However, Stewie Brown - the first owner opined: "Re roof. For me another urban myth was that it was terrible driving in rain, which I did all the time. Water used to curl and drip slightly around the back of the side windows well above the legal speed limit"
